Spy Streak (12-03-09)

Transformer of the Day for December 3, 2009

SPY STREAK

-Faction: Decepticon
-Era: Beast Machines (1999-2000)

-Function: Aerial Reconnaissance
-Motto:
“I Am The Eye In the Sky“
-Notable Toy: Basic (Hasbro, 2001)

Notes: There was so much potential in Beast Machines, within the concept of the vehicon drones, that you wish the series had more time to create more. Alas, Spy Streak never had his moment on the big screen, likely because who wants another jet fighter after Jetstorm. That said he certainly made excellent cannon fodder for Hasbro’s parade of repaints.

Cheetor (11-06-09)

Transformer of the Day for October 6, 2009

CHEETOR

-Faction: Autobot
-Era:
Beast Wars (1996-1998), Beast Machines (1999-2000)
-Function: Jungle Warrior
-Motto:
“Attack with Quickness and Leave the Enemy No Time to Think
-Notable Toy: Titanium (Hasbro, 2007)

Notes: While Cheetor got terribly serious and became a bit of a spoilsport in Beast Machines, it was nonetheless great to watch his evolution over 78 episodes in Beast Wars and Beast Machines. So many good toy choices too, but in the end I went with the much missed (by me at least) Titanium version for the big reason that it was the both the only Beast Machines release in this format and the first official release of swords. And no Night Slash Cheetor doesn’t count!

Rav (11-02-09)

Transformer of the Day for November 2, 2009

RAV

-Faction: Maximal (Deployer)
-Era:
Beast Machine (1999-2000)
-Function: Evacuation
-Motto:
“Keep To Yourself, Protect From Enemies
-Notable Toy: Basic Repaint (Hasbro, 2000)

Notes: If minicons can get love, then why not Deployers. Particularly when they represent that rare occasions when Transformer accessories were sold without being packaged with Transformers. It’s a shame that no one opted to take advantage of the moulds to do some kind of exclusive, in the vein of the odd partnership frequently implied between Rav (Chro) and Cryoteck. Although Rav will always be a hero in my books.

Optimus Primal (10-09-09)

Transformer of the Day for October 9, 2009

OPTIMUS PRIMAL

-Faction: Maximal
-Era: Beast Wars (1996-1998), Beast Machines (1999-2000)
-Function: Commander / Spirit Guide
-Motto: “The Seeds of the Future Lie Buried in the Past”
-Notable Toy: Supreme (Hasbro, 2002)

Notes: Before Transformers: Animated retroduced a neophyte Optimus Prime, Beast Wars brought us Optimus Primal, a commander who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, taking an undisciplined crew into a war and coming out a leader. Though his metamorphosis into a Transformers shaman was not the transformation fans had hoped for, the delayed release of the Supreme toy under the Robots in Disguise banner was most welcome. The boss monkey fits in perfectly in scale with Takara’s Masterpiece line, as well as Supreme Cheetor, Ultra Nightscream and Mega Rattrap.

Thrust (09-30-09)

Transformer of the Day for September 30, 2009

THRUST

-Faction: Vehicon
-Era: Beast Machines (1999-2000)
-Function: Vehicon General
-Motto: “”There are No Rules on the Road - Only the Victors and Scrap Metal”
-Notable Toy: Beast Wars Returns (Takara, 2007)

Notes: While we know now that the first three Vehicon Generals were, in fact, fallen Beast Wars comrades, it’s still surprising how efficient the transformation into Thrust made poor old Waspinator. He might not have been able to carry the fight, but he stayed true to Megatron’s command and certainly gave it his all. You almost think Megatron would have been better resurrecting Scorponok and Terrorsaur for his generals instead of Maximals.

Botanica (05-31-09)

Filed under: 07 beast machines, TF365, custom, ideas — Tags: — fairplaythings @ 12:01 am

Transformer of the Day for May 31, 2009

BOTANICA

-Faction: Maximal
-Era:
Beast Machines (1999-2000)
-Function: Deep Space Explorer
-Motto: External Growth Comes from Within
-Proposed Toy: Night Viper (Hasbro, 1999)

Notes: After 10 years of missed opportunities, it’s time for Botanica to stand tall beside her fellow Maximals in the battle for Cybertron. The problem of course is what possible figure could one change into Botanica that would even come close to her appearance in the show? Or do you overlook the obvious and give her a pre-exploratory mode? My vote is for a modified Beast Machines Night Viper, but with work done on the snake head transformation.

Strika (01-28-09)

Transformer of the Day for January 28, 2009

STRIKA

-Faction: Vehicon (General)
-Era: Beast Machines (1999-2000)
-Function: All-Terrain Combat
-Motto: “No Road is Rougher Than Me”

-Notable Toy: Beast Wars Returns (Takara, 2007)

Notes: She was the greatest of Cybertron generals, but invented for the show. She was akin to a dark Big Barda, and yet her “gender” is not even mentioned in her original text spec. Her profiles talk of “consorts” but she needs no one. The same figure was produced on three occasions (BM 2000, Universe 2004 and BW Returns 2005) and none of them get her quite right. Too good to lose, we hope TF:A get Strika done.

Jetstorm (01-06-09)

Transformer of the Day for January 6, 2009

JETSTORM

-Faction: Vehicon
-Era: Beast Machines (1999-2000)
-Function: Aerodrone General
-Motto: “Cruelty is, perhaps, the most enjoyable sin.”
-
Notable Toy: Ultra Class Beast Machines (Hasbro, 2000)

Notes: Jetstorm, afterburn! Beast Machines surely didn’t lack for flair, and the stylized vehicon general had a tendency to steal every scene he was in. To find that his boastful spark was once the noblist of Maximals was the height of irony indeed. His Ultra Class toy suitably reveals his inner elegance.

Rattrap (01-03-09)

Transformer of the Day for January 3, 2009

RATTRAP

-Faction: Maximal
-Era: Beast Wars / Beast Machines (1996-2000)
-Function: Spy
-Motto: “We’re All Gonna Die”
-
Notable Toy: Mega Beast Machines (Hasbro, 2001)

Notes: What better character to start off the Beastformers era than our favourite vermin. Rattrap’s strong characterization from Beast Wars certainly took a beating in Beast Machines, but I still love a toy that puts his knievel mode front and center in robot mode.
