Sky High (06-17-09)

Transformer of the Day for June 17, 2009

SKY HIGH

-Faction: Autobot (Pretender)
-Era: Generation One (1984-1992)
-Function: Scout
-Motto: “Imagination is the Key that Unlocks the Chains of Reality”
-Notable Toy: Deluxe Pretender (Hasbro, 1988)

Notes: Sky High was the first Pretender I had the fortune to play with. Although the inner robot is impossibly thin and limited in his transformation complexity, the concept of a protective shell that could act at the behest of the inner robot fascinated me. Also, he has a great gun. A later release, Sky High is more rare and definitely a keeper.

Skyquake (06-16-09)

Transformer of the Day for June 16, 2009

SKYQUAKE

-Faction: Decepticon (Predator)
-Era: Generation One Plus (1991-1992)
-Function: Air Commandant
-Motto: “Break Them, Crush Them - Grind Them to Dust”
-Notable Toy: European Exclusive (Hasbro, 1992)

Notes: Recently back in the spotlight thanks to his exclusive Botcon pairing with Banzai-Tron, Skyquake is another European and Canadian-release, which I’ve dubbed Generation One Plus. Although his main robot form would eventually be used for Machine Wars Starscream and new character, King Atlas, these releases wouldn’t carry all the features of the original. Like a rocket-firing pistol. The ability to drop bombs on your toys is also a pretty neat effect.

Sky Lynx (06-15-09)

Transformer of the Day for June 15, 2009

SKY LYNX

-Faction: Autobot
-Era: Generation One (1984-1992)
-Function: Lieutenant Commander
-Motto: “The best achievements are worth repeating”
-Notable Toy: Encore Edition (Takara-Tomy, 2008)

Preface: Similar to our focus on characters using the prefix and suffix, storm, this week we are focused on those heroes and villains that are literally lost in the sky.

Notes: Sky Lynx is a great toy and one of the more entertaining aspects of the third season. An egocentric talking dinosaur hybrid - really, what could be better? But as Sky Lynx never originated from Takara, but rather from Toy Box, a rival toy company, he therefore never officially set foot in Japan, until the Takara-Tomy merger unveiled he was actually built for Toy Box by Tomy. Thus he was free at last to roam the land of Godzilla. And now you know the rest of the story…

Omega Supreme (06-14-09)

Transformer of the Day for June 14, 2009

OMEGA SUPREME

-Faction: Autobot
-Era:
Animated (2008 - 2009)
-Function: Last Line of Defense
-Motto: None Shall Pass”

Notes: Let’s not even pretend. Omega Supreme needs more than a Leader class to even do him justice against the Transformers: Animated Activators. He’d also be a great way to put together an official release for Sari. Yes, Omega really needs to get himself made, and we really need to have more Transformers: Animated. Maybe Shortpacked is right… maybe desperate times do call for desperate measures!

In the meantime, Saturday mornings are just not the same. :(

SLAMDANCE

-Function: Architect
-Motto: “Beauty is in Everything Except War”
-Notable Toy: Attacktix (Hasbro, Unreleased)

Spittor (06-13-09)

Transformer of the Day for June 13, 2009

SPITTOR

-Faction: Decepticon
-Era: Animated (2008 - 2009)
-Function: Warrior

-Motto: Hungry”

Notes: It’s hard to resist a giant space-based alien frog, and yet, there’s Spittor. So much more effective than his Robots in Disguise namesake, here is a big dumb Decepticon who somehow still manages to lay waste to his enemies. A big lumbering soldier to have in one’s corner, I have no idea how one could even begin to repaint this one. I just want one!

Red Alert (06-12-09)

Transformer of the Day for June 12, 2009

RED ALERT

-Faction: Autobot
-Era:
Animated (2008 - 2009)
-Function: Medic
-Motto: This Won’t Hurt a Bit”

Notes: If there was ever a reason to create a brand new animated figure, it’s Red Alert. With elements of both the Generation One and Armada characters, she somehow remains distinct and fresh. Worst case scenario, I suppose she could be modified from a Blurr, but in this case, I gotta argue that she’s really worthy of a new construction. After all, we always need new medibots!

Scrapper (06-11-09)

Transformer of the Day for June 11, 2009

SCRAPPER

-Faction: Decepticon
-Era: Animated (2008 - 2009)
-Function: Builder

-Motto: Pass the Lubricant”

Notes: Like Mixmaster, Scrapper is really in it for the oil. And yet, unlike his bulkier comrade-in-arms, he still stepped up when Sari needed reinforcements to rescue the Earth-bound Autobots. It’s hard to imagine what figure could really do Scrapper justice, although I am sure a talented kitbasher could give a Blitzwing a whirl.

Hot Shot (06-10-09)

Transformer of the Day for June 10, 2009

HOT SHOT

-Faction: Autobot
-Era:
Animated (2008 - 2009)
-Function: Sharp Shooter
-Motto: Can’t Keep a Good Bot Down

Notes: One of the charms of Transformers: Animated is the use of characters from different eras. Hot Shot is probably one of the best known characters from Armada-Energon-Cybertron, and his appearance incorporates both his classic yellow and later blue appearances. Given his recent Universe 2.0 appearance, it’s not surprising he didn’t make the cut for a toy version. Given the bulkiness of the original mold, you could almost use a recoloured Armada Hot Shot to bring to the party.

Flashback, Heartattack, Everytime I see your face…

The thing about undertaking a project like the Transformer-of-the-day is that it takes a lot of little efforts to bring everything together each day. Usually, I am working on the pictures, slogans or backgrounders for three or four characters at a go, which makes for a lot of work in a single setting, but then lets me off the hook for a few days. This approach was working really well until I met up against the deadline for the diorama, and the limited access to the internet in Pasadena.

You see, I had a plan going forward. I had the characters and I had the pictures. I figured I would update the characters a little bit each day in California and never miss a beat. But I failed to make the pictures easily accessible and the diorama ate into more of my time than expected. And it was California - who can really focus on Transformers to the exclusion of those mountains, to say nothing of the toys.

And once one is off the wagon, the wagon can get ahead of you.

One week back from my travels, and a little more than two weeks after my last timely entry of Shattered Glass Goldbug, I am pleased to announced that the backlog is restored. Continuing in daily order, you can find the last of the best exclusives in Airazor and Piranacon, before moving into seven proposals for futures toys in Kranix, Jhiaxus, Devcon, Shattered Glass Downshift and Dirge, Straxus and Botanica. The trick to each of these entries proposes a toy rendering that could bring these characters to life.

Then, in celebration and tribute to the best Transformers’ series since 1996’s Beasties, the TF of the day showcases not one but TWO WEEKS worth of Transformers: Animated toys that need to be made. Week One kicks off with “Ramjet”, Perceptor, Strika, Warpath, Mixmaster, Brawn and Cyclonus, while week two follows with Wheeljack, (today’s entry) Susan (Slipstream) and… well, that would be telling.

Suffice to say, we’re back. Let the good times roll!
